Vodka is a clear spirit of high purity. It can be made from a wide range of raw materials, mostly grain is used. Vodka is often considered a tasteless, odorless spirit suitable only for mixing or inducing drunkenness. But there is a lot more to vodka than that. True, the U.S. government might define vodka as a clear neutral spirit of no discernable flavour or aroma, and many vodkas aspire to this standard. But even among these, there is a quite noticeable variation in quality. Eastern-style vodkas have a lot more flavour, or "character."

How to serve: When serving vodka, everything should be almost painfully cold to touch. The bottle should be kept in the freezer and the glasses should also be iced. If there isn't a heavy mist of condensation on the outside of the glass, it isn't cold enough. Some vodka shotsare thrown back like schnapps, owing to an ols folk belief that if you inhale the fumes for more than a split second, you will too drunk too quickly. The aged vodkas, and specialities such as Zubrowka, are more often sipped slowly and appreciately. A little shot glass is traditional, but in some homes a rather larger, narrow tumbler, or even something like a goblet wine glass, is used.
